Clemson University have won a stunning US College Football Playoff National Championship Final, defeating heavy favourites Alabama University 35-31 after claiming the winning touchdown with one second of the match remaining.

Clemson's victory, the first time the Tigers have won a National Championship since 1981, avenged their defeat to the same opponents in the season-ending match last year.

The South Carolina-based college were behind for most of the game, trailing 24-14 at the end of the third-quarter, with fears that their opponents would run away with the contest and win back-to-back national titles.

However with only one second of the game remaining quarterback Deshaun Watson struck again for the Tigers, throwing a two yard pass to wide receiver Hunter Renfrow to win the national championship for his side.
